In an effort to improve relations with the West, in the 1970s the People’s Republic of China organized and circulated "The Exhibition of the Archaeological Finds of the People's Republic of China," which featured 385 objects that had been unearthed in the preceding two decades under the auspices of the government. After opening in Paris in 1973, the exhibit travelled to London, Vienna, Stockholm, Toronto, and Washington, D.C., before coming to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (April 20-June 8, 1975) and continuing to the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.
